The end of the early peak season and a truncated US east coast port strike has led to a lull in active tonnage in the global liner fleet, with Alphaliner pointing to an increase in the number of idle vessels over the past fortnight, to a total 245,000 teu.

Global demand for ocean freight container shipping has hit a record level, surpassing peak-Covid demand, but leaving shippers with a big question about the traditional peak season.

As global demand for box ship capacity continues to dramatically outstrip supply, the number of idled vessels is down to numbers not seen since the pandemic.
According to new Alphaliner data, in the first half of the year, commercially idle tonnage represented an average of 0.7% of the container shipping fleet, “harking back to levels seen during the pandemic”, it reported.

Older ships are no longer being categorised as ‘waste’ for the purpose of EU law, meaning European-flagged ships can now legally be scrapped outside the EU.

The amount of containership capacity idled has surged again, the latest survey from Alphaliner reporting 315 vessels (1.18 million teu) in lay-up, representing 4.3% of the global fleet.
