Congestion issues continue to plague Hamburg’s flagship automated Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA), due to operator HHLA’s modernisation programme, forcing carriers to drop sailings into Germany’s largest port.
Jan Kolditz, director of IT and terminal development of HHLA, told The Loadstar on the sidelines of the recent World Ports Conference in Hamburg that CTA was replacing its entire fleet of ship-to-shore cranes.

Port of Valencia slowly gets back to work after floods from rainstorms

Valencia Port is limping back to cargo activity after it was forced to halt operations in the aftermath of severe rainstorms that lashed the country’s south-eastern region last week.
The devastation from what was said to be the severest flash-flooding in Europe over the past five decades, is reported to have claimed some 100 lives.
Container lines have reported work resumption at Valencia on a “restricted scale”, as multiple landside challenges persist.

Container shipping lines on the main east-west trades this week managed to reverse 15 weeks of consecutive declines in spot freight rates by managing to push through a general rate increase on ex-Asia loadings.
This week’s Drewry World Container Index (WCI) saw the spot rate on the Shanghai-Rotterdam leg rise 8% week on week, to $3,396 per 40ft, while the Shanghai-Genoa leg grew 11%, to $3,648 per 40ft.

Liner schedule reliability: some improvement as strike turmoil begins

On the eve of possible widespread disruption due to industrial action across US east and Gulf coast ports, schedule reliability across the container shipping sector has been marginally improving.

Gemini Cooperation’s “hub and spoke” strategy was predicted to be “ineffective” by speakers at the Busan International Port Conference in South Korea last week.
The Gemini tie-up between Maersk Line and Hapag-Lloyd will launch operations in February 2025.
