DFDS has shown its intent to expand its Mediterranean market share, today unveiling a new weekly ferry service between its growing Italian hub of Trieste and the Egyptian port of Damietta.
The move represents the Danish operator’s first foray into the Egyptian market and comes just days after it cancelled its €500m purchase of the international network of Turkish transport group Ekol Logistics.

The push for Adriatic container ports to compete with North European terminals for market share in Central and Eastern Europe took another step forward this week.

Hamburg-based container terminal operator HHLA is set to enter the Italian market, agreeing to buy a majority stake in the under-development Piattaforma Logistica Trieste (PLT) terminal in the port of Trieste.
HHLA will acquire 50.1% of PLT’s share capital in a deal expected to close in January that will likely coincide with the launch of terminal operations.

Growing congestion on the north-south central European rail freight corridors this week prompted an emergency meeting between the heads of Deutsche Bahn and Swiss rail operator SBB.

Ekol Logistics takes control of port of Triest’s ro-ro terminal operator

Fast-growing multimodal Turkish logistics firm Ekol has bought a 65% stake in Europa Multipurpose Terminals (EMT), the ro-ro terminal operator in the Italian port of Trieste, its main European gateway.
Ekol’s ro-ro shipping subsidiary, Alternative Transport, operates four weekly services between the Haydarpasa terminal in Istanbul to Trieste, and one a week to the French Mediterranean port of Sete.
Trieste has also acted as its intermodal hub for Europe, with 44 weekly train services ...
